During the American Civil War of 1861-65 cruisers were built for the Confederacy in England and sailed unarmed to the Azores and Madeira. Arms for the ships were purchased separately in England and the ships carrying the arms met the cruisers in waters off the Azores and Madeira, where they were armed and commissioned.
