The battle in the Tagus in 1808 between the French and British navies ultimately led to the death of Captain Shipley, commander of HMS Nymphe, as he tried to board the French Corvette, La Gavotte, one of the vessels being used by Junot to block access to Lisbon. Shipley’s body was washed up some days later at Paço de Arcos and buried nearby. A monument was subsequently erected by the British at or close to Shipley’s grave and this was restored and rededicated in 2017.
