13 April. We shall be showing, at the Academia de Letras e Artes (ALA), Av. de Castelhana 15, Monte Estoril, a two-part film on Churchill’s visit to Madeira in January 1950. This is an RTP production in Portuguese but English is spoken in the newsreel footage. Each part lasts 45 minutes. Space will be booked at a local restaurant for dinner after the event.

4 May. David Sampson will talk on “Menasseh ben Israel and his petition to Cromwell in 1656 to permit Jews to re-enter and live in England”. Mensasseh ben Israel was a Lisbon-born Rabbi whose parents fled the Inquisition and settled in Amsterdam. He became the best-known representative of the Jews of Europe and was in contact with many of the leading Christian thinkers of his time. He went to London to present his petition to Parliament. Did he get the permission he wanted?” The event will be held in Cascais.
