In the age of the Napoleonic Wars, seapower became a crucial element in the struggle for European hegemony. Besides naval operations carried on by warring nations, a series of amphibious expeditions were launched against the sea coast controlled by Napoleon and his allies. Although many of them were undeniable failures, seapower proved to be of major significance in the struggle that raged in the Iberian peninsula between 1808 and 1812.
