10 July 2022 marked the 650th anniversary of the conclusion of the Treaty of Tagilde, one of the principal treaties leading to the formation of the Anglo-Portuguese alliance – the oldest alliance in the world still in force. This article examines the context and consequences of the treaty, which provided the legal foundation for the subsequent alliance.
