Excerpt:

The purpose of this article is to analyse the Treaty of Commerce and Navigation and the Treaty of Alliance and Friendship signed between Britain and Portugal in 1810. They are considered an important milestone for both Brazilian and Portuguese history, especially regarding the revolutions that marked the Old Regime on both sides of the Atlantic, specifically Porto's Revolution in 1820 and Brazilian Independence in 1822. We can also consider these treaties as an important starting point for understanding Britain's dominance in the 19th-century and its role in the gradual process of abolishing the slave trade.
