Portugal in the early 1800s before the Peninsular War was walking a political tightrope. If it had supported France, Britain would have occupied its colonies, particularly Brazil with all its wealth, and would have destroyed Portugal's fleet. If, on the other hand, it had continued to side with Britain, it risked invasion by France.
