My main purpose is to quote as much as possible from Marialva's 41 unpublished letters in Portuguese to Beckford, in order to show the Marquis' charming and honourable character; the nature of his unusual friendship for Beckford, and how it gave this strange Englishman who was under a cloud the friendship and esteem of the Prince Regent of Portugal (later King João VI); and the pain it caused Marialva - which sooner or later every devoted friend of Beckford suffered.
