The Inglezinhos or more accurately the Pontifical College of SS. Peter and Paul was founded in Lisbon in 1622. At that time the future of Catholics in England was uncertain. For some time the Catholic Church had operated seminaries in Douai, Rome, Seville and Valladolid, at which priests could be trained and, after ordination, return clandestinely to their native land. An Irish seminary had been established in Lisbon before 1592 and a Residence for English priests in 1594. The article examines the establishment of the Pontifical College.
