Excerpt:

The Hogan fanily has lived in Portugal for over 300 years. Portugal, together with Spain, was a preferred refuge for persecuted Irish Catholics during the 17th century, either during the 'Flight of the Earls' (which brought the O'Neills, the claimants to the Irish throne to Portugal) or when Cromwell's army occupied Ireland. The article recounts the history of four prominent members of the Hogan family over three centuries. (Illustration: Painting by Ricardo Hogan)
