This article traces the history of the Historical Association of Lisbon, which was the forerunner of the British Historical Society of Portugal (BHSP). Established in 1937 as a branch of the Historical Association of Great Britain, the branch was active until around 1954 in compiling historical documentation relating to Anglo-Portuguese relations and in publishing annual reports with thoughtful articles. Most of these articles are available on the BHSP’s web site and much of the documentation is in its library.
The annual reports ceased to be published after 1954 and little information is available about the Association’s activities after that. In 1968 a meeting was held to discuss its future and, while that meeting agreed that every effort should be made to reconstitute the body, there appears to have been little follow up. A report in the Anglo-Portuguese News (APN) at the time noted that the Association had been “dormant” for six years.
