Some few years ago, when staying at Sintra, Miss Sauvayre happened to mention to me that her Lisbon house had been a Hospital. At this period when Portuguese discoveries are being so much talked about it may be worth recalling that Dona Maria Salina Sauvayre de la Camera was lineal descendant of Gonçalves Zarco, the Portuguese discoverer of Madeira. Dom John I gave the name of «la Camera» and the governorship of the island to Zarco and his descendants. Dona Maria Salina's own father held that post until his death.
