Excerpt:

In the same way that the inscription on a gravestone tells of the deceased occupant of the grave, so the village sign of Mina de São Domingos tells of the dead remains of mine workings whose history stretches back thousands of years. The village lies on the eastern side of the River Guadiana, about 3km from the Spanish border and about 20km to the east of the nearest large town, Mértola, in Beja District.
