This article is reprinted from the 4th Annual Report of the British Historical Association, 1940. The De Vismes were a Huguenot family. Gerard arrived in Lisbon from London around 1746, finally returning to London in 1792. He made his fortune from holding the monopoly on Brazilwood. He briefly leased the Monserrate estate in Sintra in 1789.
