In the research that I have done over the years, on the defence of the Portuguese frontiers and in some of the works I have published on the matter, in the context of the Peninsular War, I overlooked until recently, a short document which came into my hands some years ago. I cannot find a reason for my indifference, particularly as it carries a rather interesting title: "Golpe de vista Militar sobre as nossas Praças de Guerra" (A Military eyeview of our Fortresses) or "Influência destas na defesa das Provincias em que se acham situadas, e sobre os pontos que se deveriam fortificar para augmentar esta defeza," (Their influence in the defence of the Provinces in which they are located, and on the points that should be fortified so as to increase the defence).
