Excerpt:

Based on an archive of letters written from and to Lisbon in the 1750s and 1760s by the owner of an import/export business in Lisbon.

Luke Foreman was a successful businessman who, together with his wife, used his income to build up an extensive collection of artworks, including A Magdalen (illustrated) by Titian. The article, by a noted collector of documents related to the history of collecting, discusses how the works were purchased and what happened to them after the deaths of the couple.
