The author initially places the poet's elegy "O poeta Simónides, falando" in the context of the banishment of Camões to India for three years to serve as a common soldier for three years, after being convicted of wounding someone in a duel in Lisbon. In fact, Camões spent a total of 17 years in exile and the author argues that this had much to do with his emergence as a great poet.
