Lieutenant Bevan was an officer during the Peninsular War who was held responsible for the breakout from Almeida (illustrated) of French forces led by General Brennier. Bevan subsequently committed suicide. Drawing in part on letters held by the Bevan family, the author describes the circumstances leading up to his death.
