After the marriage of Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg to Queen Maria II, the Portuguese and British royal couples developed strong family links, mutual admiration and friendship. The two queens wrote frequently to each other. The links were particularly relevant in the lives of the princes who were to become Kings Pedro V and Luís I, Maria's and Ferdinands eldest children.
