Paulo Lowndes Marques was born in 1941, the son of an English mother and a Portuguese father. After receiving a law degree he set up his own practice and achieved prominence both nationally and internationally. He was a founder member of the Centro Democrático e Social – Partido Popular and became Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He was Chairman of the British Historical Society for 25 years and held many honorary positions.
