The author provides a detailed description of Livingstone's travels throughout southern Africa. Initially having travelled to the continent as a missionary, at which he was very unsuccessful, managing to convert no one, Livingstone later became more of an explorer, undertaking one six-year mission that the author describes as an "unmitigated disaster". His travels took him to the Portuguese territories of Angola and Portugal and he also crossed paths with Portuguese slave traders.
