This article attempts to briefly evaluate and compare British and Portuguese attitudes towards the British Ultimatum, as it came to be known in Portugal. This refers to the Memorandum sent to the Portuguese Government by Lord Salisbury on 11 January 1980 demanding the withdrawal of Portuguese troops from Mashonaland and the Shire-Nysa region, where British and Portuguese interests collided.
