The British advance against the Boers induced many Afrikaners to load their wagons and flee northwards ahead of the British forces, through Eastern Transvaal and eventually to Lourenço Marques (Maputo) by train. Others reached Mozambique by different routes. Many were eventually transferred to Portugal. Boer commanders were housed at Abrantes, others were kept in Alcobaça and Peniche. Those breaking the rules were moved to the fort of São Julião de Barra at Oeiras.
