The paper sets out to describe Portuguese freemasonry during 265 mostly troubled years. As in other countries, there has been unwavering opposition from the Roman Catholic Church and freemasonry has been frequently outlawed. For one reason or other Portuguese Freemasons in hundreds and thousands have been tortured, killed, imprisoned, exiled, and depaorted. Yet the Order has never failed to survive.
