Edmund Winstanley was born into an old Lancashire Catholic family in 1772. In 1787 he was admitted to the English College in Lisbon, which, when Marshal Junot entered Lisbon in 1807 was used to house French troops. After the departure of the French, Lisbon became the HQ of British and Portuguese forces.Winstanley offered his services as Chaplain, not returning to regular duties at the College until after the Battle of Waterloo.
