After lunch we have a guided visit of Palácio de Bemposta. As a widow, Catherine of Braganza lived in the Palace, which was constructed on the open plateau of the Colina Santana (otherwise known as Campo de Sant'Ana) in the 16th Century. João VI died here in 1826, having been besiged in the palace by supporters of his rebel son, D. Miguel, in 1821. The impressive building is now home to the Academia Militar, which is older than Sandhurst, its equivalent in the UK. Lunch has been booked at a local restaurant within walking distance.
