Following on from the fascinating talk at the Annual Lunch in January, this three day trip to the Beira Alta will be based at Urgeiriça. It includes a guided tour to the now deactivated uranium mine where Madame Curie sourced her first samples of radium. We also visit the Jewish heritage museum of Belmonte, where we visit one of the oldest synagogues in Portugal. In Gouveia, we visit two museums, one of which has the original lintel stone of the synagogue of Gouveia with the oldest existing Hebrew inscription in Portugal, which dates back to 1496. The other has on display the vestiges of the tombstone of a British colonel who died in the local hospital in 1813 from wounds incurred during the Peninsular War. On the return journey we stop off for a self-guided tour of the famous Roman ruins at Conimbriga.
Venue: The two nights will be spent at the 4-star Hotel de Ugeiriça.
Price: €370 per person sharing a double/twin room, €70 single room supplement - all inclusive, including accommodation, all meals and drinks, transport, museum entrance fees, and insurance. €30 surcharge for non-Members.
