Background: The Lisbon Aqueduct is one of the most remarkable examples of 18th century Portuguese engineering, built on the orders of D. João V, the same king who was responsible for the building of the magnificent Palácio de Mafra. Construction started in 1731 and although the work was only terminated in 1799, water first started to flow along its channels to Lisbon in 1744. The main course of the aqueduct covers 18 km, with the whole network of canals extending to nearly 58 km to bring drinking water from sources in Caneças, in the current municipality of Odivelas.

After the walk, participants will have the option to prolong the visit to be shown around the EPAL water museum at the Mãe d’ Água, at the Praça das Amoreiras. The walk alone lasts one hour, and the full programme of both the walk and the visit to the Mãe d’ Água reservoir lasts about two hours. This activity is mainly outdoors.
