The Lisbon Aqueduct and the Mãe d' Água Water Museum

The Lisbon Aqueduct and the Mãe d’ Água Water Museum
A guided walk along the iconic Aqueduct and a visit to the Mãe d’ Água

Date and time: Saturday, 30th October, 2021, at 10.00.

Background: The Lisbon Aqueduct is one of the most remarkable examples of 18th century Portuguese engineering, built on the orders of D. João V, the same king who was responsible for the building of the magnificent Palácio de Mafra. Construction started in 1731 and although the work was only terminated in 1799, water first started to flow along its channels to Lisbon in 1744. The main course of the aqueduct covers 18 km, with the whole network of canals extending to nearly 58 km to bring drinking water from sources in Caneças, in the current municipality of Odivelas.

Programme: An expert guide will lead us on a walking tour along the last kilometre of the iconic aqueduct, up until the main reservoir that supplied the city of Lisbon with drinking water. After the walk, participants will have the option to prolong the visit to be shown around the EPAL water museum at the Mãe d’ Água, at the Praça das Amoreiras. The walk alone lasts one hour, and the full programme of both the walk and the visit to the Mãe d’ Água reservoir lasts about two hours. This activity is mainly outdoors.

Start point: at the start of the Aqueduct, Calçada da Quintinha, No.6, 1070-225 Lisboa (Alto de Campolide).

End point: Mãe d’ Água Reservoir, Praça das Amoreiras, 1250-020 Lisboa. Nearest Metro station - Lago do Rato.

Parking: for those travelling by car, it is advisable to park near the end point, at one of the following three carparks:
