Our guest speaker will be Dra. Margarida Ramalho, whose illustrated talk in English is entitled ‘Lisbon – the Last Frontier’, which describes Portugal during WWII. A well-known archaeologist, Margarida Ramalho is a first cousin of the British Historical Society’s late longstanding Chairman, Dr. Paulo Lowndes Marques. She kindly made this presentation to the Society’s Annual Lunch near Lisbon in January and, following its excellent reception, has agreed to repeat the talk for the Porto branch. Dra. Ramalho was responsible for setting up the ‘Frontier of Peace Museum’ in Vilar Formoso, which includes a section on Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who saved the lives of thousands of refugees by issuing them with Portuguese visas in Bordeaux, as they fled the Nazis in the south of France.

Members and guests are welcome to stay on for dinner at the Club, for which tables will be reserved.

Cost for the talk: Free for BHSP Members, €5.00 for Non-members – payable on the day
