Programme: after welcome refreshments, we will be privileged to hear a talk by Gonçalo Byrne on his experience of being brought up at the British-owned uranium mine at Urgeiriça, near the Serra de Estrela, where his father was the general manager. The talk will be followed by excerpts from a film where his mother features among the interviewees. The Companhia Portuguesa de Radium was founded in 1927 with British capital and sent radium to Madame Curie in France. Then the atomic bomb changed everything. The United States purchased 20 tons of uranium from Urgeiriça not long before the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on the 6th August, 1945. The mine ceased production in 1981 after the discovery of uranium in South Africa, Australia, and the south west of the United States and was subsequently the object of a major de-contamination exercise.
Lunch: after the talk a three-course buffet lunch will be served, with drinks and coffee.
