Programme: We are privileged to count with a talk by the author Dr Mark S. Thompson, who will be in Portugal to commemorate the Lines of Torres Vedras Day two days after the talk. The talk will be on a less-known but all-important topic regarding the Lines of Torres Vedras, on which Dr. Thompson is an acclaimed expert.
A Military Historian specialising in the Peninsular War 1808-14, his first publication, The Fatal Hill (2002), covered the campaign culminating in the battle of Albuera in May 1811. In 2009, he completed a PhD on the Royal Engineers during this period, which was subsequently published as a book entitled Wellington's Engineers (2015). He has published several other books, including Wellington’s Favourite Engineer and Wellington and the Lines of Torres Vedras. He has presented at many conferences in the UK and abroad and is a member of the British Commission for Military History, the Friends of the British Cemetery at Elvas, the Royal Engineers Historical Society, and the Friends of the Lines of Torres Vedras. After the event, members and their guests can have dinner at the nearby Adega da Monte (at their own cost), although unfortunately the guest speaker cannot attend owing to another pressing engagement.
