After the evacuation of the army of Sir John Moore (1761-1809) from Corunna in Galicia (where he was killed), Marshall Soult (1769-1851) invaded the North of Portugal, during the so-called 2nd Invasion. Soult occupied Oporto, but the future Duke of Wellington crosser the Douro and outflanked the French. Soult then hurriedly abandoned Oporto and Portugal.
