Excerpt:

The Loyal Lusitanian Legion, which fought in the Peninsular War, was a British army unit initially consisting largely of Portuguese émigrés in England. It was the idea of José Maria Moura and Carlos Frederico Lecor, two Portuguese Army colonels who had gone into exile in England after the French invasion of Portugal in 1807, with the support of Portugal’s ambassador to Britain, Domingos António de Sousa. The article is a slightly edited version of one by Richard Tennant, which first appeared in First Empire Magazine #91 (November – December 2006). Sadly, Richard died in 2021. We are very grateful to his widow, Sue, for allowing us to reproduce the article, and to our member, Marcus Beresford, for putting us in contact with her.
