Tregian was an English recusant. After his pardon by King James he made his way to Lisbon. He died at the Jesuithospice at Igreja de São Roque, where he was buried. In 1974 when the British Historical Society was formed it was fortunate to receive  a typescript of a book of which only one copy is thought to exist, in the British Museum, Heroum Speculum De Vita D.D. Francisci Tregeon. The article presents a transcription of the book.
