The Dabney family in America traces its descent from the Hugenots who fled France in the 17th century. In 1806 John Bass Dabney arrived in Faial in the Azores. In 1892 his descendants sailed away from the island. During their 86 year stay the Dabneys provided three generations of American consuls and were involved in ship supply and repair, trade in Pico wine, whaling and a variety of other business ventures. They had a major impact on the Azores.
