Excerpt:

Robert Snell was on watch as a lieutenant on HMS Minotaur when it hit a sandbank in the North Sea off the Netherlands. He survived but many lost their lives with the event being immortalised by Turner (see illustration). The author traces Snell's career from the age of 14 when he first went to sea, to his role with the packet ships sailing in and out of Falmouth and his eventual death in Sines, Portugal.
