In our Report & Review for 1940, page 239, we published a paper contributed by Miss Meta Williams giving the family history of Gerard de Visme, of Hugenôt descent, one of the members of the old "British Factory" in Lisbon, but more noteworthy to us as the wealthy benefactor who contributed the necessary funds for the rebuilding and enlargement of the British hospital adjoining the cemetery grounds. The "Factory" records of that time state that the new building was erected partly on the same ground where the former hospital had stood and partly on an extra strip ceded from the Dutch portion of the cemetery.

 

Our former contributer has recently favoured us with a photograph of an old oil painting of Gerard de Visme, evidently made during occupation of his palatial residence at Benfica (northern suburb of Lisbon), and which we reproduce.
