An expert guide will lead us on a walking tour of the Prazeres Cemetery (Cemitério dos Prazeres), one of the largest cemeteries in Lisbon. It is located at the western end of the bairro of Campo de Ourique and is considered to be one of the most beautiful and famous cemeteries in the world. The cemetery was founded in 1833 after the outbreak of cholera in the city, at the same time as the Alto de São João Cemetery to the east of Lisbon. The cemetery comprises mainly mausoleums, including the mausoleum of the Dukes of Palmela, which is the largest mausoleum in Europe, which we shall visit. The Prazeres Cemetery is the resting place of many famous personalities, including prime ministers and presidents of Portugal, notable literary figures, famous cultural figures, and the Portuguese nobility.
