Before the AGM, we will be delighted to welcome Filipa Lowndes Vicente as a speaker. Since 2009, Filipa has been a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She has a postgraduate degree and a PhD from the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies of Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her doctoral thesis gave rise to the book Travels and Exhibitions: D. Pedro V in Europe of the 19th Century, which received the "Victor de Sá Prize for Contemporary History" in 2004. Filipa is the niece of our former chairman, Paulo Lowndes Marques, and cousin of Filipe Lowndes Marques, who is chairman of our AGM.

Filipa’s illustrated talk, Goa is a place an Englishman ought to visit: British travellers in Goa (1850-1950), will be based on her book Entre Dois Impérios: Viajantes Britânicos em Goa (1800-1940), which was published in 2015 and described in one review as “enlightening and often hilarious” and another as “representing a great contribution to understanding the vision that the English had of Goa in the 19th and 20th centuries”.
