Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), one of Portugal’s greatest poets, accompanied his family to Durban in South Africa, where he learned good English. He published several books of poetry in this language and kept a diary in English, and often did the Times’ crossword puzzle.
His last written words were in English: “I know not what tomorrow will bring”.
